On a beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, I enlisted the help of my neighbour to kindly assist in taking my lawnmower down the park, so that Ash and I could begin the preparations for the return of football to Thorney Football club. We began by taking samples from the turf to send off to the labs for testing to see what food would help enrich the grass and soil. Once this task had been carried out for pitch 1 (Mens), we continued to the pitch 2, 3 and 4. These samples will take 21 days to come back from the laboratory. In the meantime, we decided to make the most of the beautiful weather by treating the grass to a nice cut. However, with the size of the lawnmower and the size of the park we didn't fancy our chances of completing it anytime this year! So, we stuck to the task in hand and cut a section of the grass to for sampling.
We hoping that with imminent funding we should be able to purchase the relevant equipment to self maintain the pitches to a very good standard. We are in constant dialogue with Cambridgeshire FA to assist with thee green keeping measure. We will also be sending 2 members of staff on a green keeping course to ensure that all sports can be played all year round on the playing field.
